South West France Our choice of golf in South West France is featured around the elegant resort of Biarritz and the Medoc wine region outside the city of Bordeaux. A combination of the two have the makings of a superb golfing holiday.Biarritz is now enjoying a revival, having first become fashionable when Empress Eugene, wife of Napoleon 111 built a palace by the beach in 1854; it soon became one of the most fashionable resorts in Europe with visitors including Queen Victoria of England and Alphonso X111, the king of Spain and their followers. Eugene’s palace is today the Hotel du Palais, a truly classic, deluxe hotel in the grand tradition. Golf arrived soon after in the shape of Biarritz Le Phare in 1888. A number of other excellent courses followed in the town area and along the coast to the north in particular the highly rated Seignosse, a rather hilly forest course designed by Robert Von Hagge and Robert Trent Jones’s Moliets, a stunning combination of forest and links. Après golf activities include two casinos, great restaurants, fine beaches and cliff top walks as well as the Museum of the Sea with its collection of sharks and dolphins and a fine Asian art museum. Further north at Bordeaux we feature the two Medoc courses, Les Chateaux , a hugely challenging inland links and its more friendly neighbour, Les Vignes set out in the adjoining forest. While in the area we suggest you stay right on the Medoc courses at the modern comfortable Hotel du Golf or for private parties at the nearby elegant Chateau Marojallia. Besides the golf lap up the atmosphere and some of the stunning wines of the area together with some of the finest food in France!
