The South of France Although golf was introduced here in the late 1800’s with the opening of the Old Course designed by Harry Colt at Cannes Mandelieu,it was not until the latter half of the 1900’s that golf really took off. Since then a wealth of excellent courses have been developed, designed by a wide range of architects including Pete & POB Dye, Robert Trent Jones, Robert Von Hagge and Ronald Fream, making this into a truly fine area to play golf and enjoy the sophistication and traditions of a classic resort area, glamorized over the years by Royalty and film stars alike.Find time while you are here to make your way inland to Provence, away from the coastline of luxury hotels, casinos and yacht filled harbors where towns and cities reflect their historic pasts and where the countryside inspired artists such as Matissse, Van Gogh and Picasso to paint their finest works; to Nimes and its Roman amphitheatre and bull fights; Aix en Provence, where the University was established in 1409 and still flourishes today. And besides all this history, there are great golf courses to play; to the south Pete Dye’s challenging Barbaroux to the north Seve Ballesteros’ Pont Royal, recently a venue of the European Seniors tour. If you enjoy fine food and excellent locally produced wine, fascinating excursions and some very special and varied golf, this is the place for you. |
